{‘You Think Assault’s Because of You’: Academy Award Winner Brenda Fricker Reflects On The Painful Autobiography

Resting in a bed decorated with pillows, Brenda Fricker sports a deep blue blouse and sports grey-golden ringlets. One night table displays her pills—25 tablets a day—while another holds a glass of water, an tray, and her smokes. Above her are bookcases stocked with volumes by writers like Edna O’Brien.

Currently eighty years of age, Fricker admits she is ailing and chooses to speak from her bed in Dublin. I am out of breath just talking,” she says. I have never experienced fatigue like this before.”

When she was 8, the man who provided her speech lessons made her expose herself while he pleasured himself.

This grande dame of British film and television—known for performances in Coronation Street and an Oscar for My Left Foot—is an authority on endurance. Her memoir, called A Life in Fragments, reveals a existence marked by abuse and violence.

She was raised in Dublin with a detached dad and a parent who occasionally grew violent. In spite of love from family, she became an anxious girl who often accidents.

Harvey Weinstein put his hands around me and I felt I’d be sick.

At eight, she befriended a 30-year-old man who gave her elocution lessons. Eventually, he forced her to expose herself while he masturbated. But Fricker does not regret the friendship, stating it felt like a “good deal” for the companionship she received.

Later, at fourteen, a terrible bike crash put her in the medical care for 2 years. Then, at 17, she was raped at a gathering, which left her “broken.”

Her book details a sexual assault by an British actor named James Donnelly.

She did not tell the attack to police. Women are raped and they’re embarrassed of themselves,” she explains. “You think it’s your fault.”

Despite health issues and constant pain, Fricker maintains her spirit and passion for life. She recalls working with names like Harvey Weinstein with a mix of candor and humor.

The autobiography, created out of monetary necessity, took four long years to complete. “It was murder,” she confesses. “I spent invested a fortune to erase these things.”

Now, confined to her bed, she spends hours watching programs like reality TV and thinking on a life of strength, suffering, and remarkable success.

The Oscar winner’s memoir provides a raw look into survival, pain, and the lasting strength of the individual soul.
