FBI Director Kash Patel was seen in front of the US Senate judiciary committee on Tuesday sporting a necktie featuring the logo of EPL side Liverpool.
Social Media Buzz
The choice of neckwear sparked curiosity on social media. Firstly, it is extremely rare for a public figure to wear a tie with the logo of a company or athletic club. Additionally, Patel has not publicly expressed fandom for Liverpool previously—at least not verbally.
However, he has been photographed wearing Liverpool ties on at least two distinct occasions. One occasion was on 12 December 2024, when Patel was meeting congressional members on Capitol Hill after Donald Trump’s election victory. At the time, he was rumored to be entering the government. The second took place roughly five months after, on 9 April 2025, at a media briefing highlighting the capture of drug traffickers by US law enforcement.
Multiple Ties
Interestingly, the necktie used on Tuesday was different from the earlier one. Previous design had broad lines and a discrete logo, while the newer tie boasted thinner stripes and a larger emblem—identified as the “heritage tie”.
His apparent possesses multiple Liverpool ties suggests that his choice is not a fluke.
Heated Proceedings
During Tuesday’s hearing, the mood turned heated on several occasions. Patel engaged in a shouting match with US senators Cory Booker and Adam Schiff. He stood by his management of the FBI, his firing of longtime staff implicated in investigations concerning the Capitol attacks, and a tweet in which he declared that a suspect was in custody for the killing of right-wing figure Charlie Kirk—a statement that proved premature.
“I do not consider it an error,” Patel told the committee. “I see it as cooperating with the public to identify that there was a individual in detention.”
Political Divide
Should Patel actually follow Liverpool, it would represent a sharp clash of political allegiances. Being among the US’s foremost law enforcement officers, Patel has been a visible representative of a second Trump administration that has used heavy-handed tactics to impact multiple aspects of society.
These involve raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in open areas that have resulted in the detention of many of immigrants regardless of their residency or citizenship. It also includes the sending of government officers to liberal US cities in response to alleged higher crime rates—assertions that have been debunked.
The Club’s Identity
Liverpool, on the other hand, is known to be one of the more left-leaning teams in Europe, from one of the most left-leaning cities in the UK.
Famous Liverpool manager Bill Shankly once stated: “I am convinced the only way to live and to be truly successful is by teamwork, with everyone working for each other, everyone helping each other, and everyone having a portion of the rewards at the end of the day.”
Although the business of Liverpool have changed in recent times, traces of socialist ideology remain. Former head coach Jürgen Klopp, who led the club to great success from 2015 to 2024, summed up his personal beliefs by saying: “If I am doing well, I want others to do well, too. One thing I will never do in my life is vote for the right.”
Historical Strains
The club’s fans also have a considerable history of opposition toward law enforcement. A lot of this stems from the Hillsborough tragedy of 1989, which killed 97 Liverpool fans. Initially, police accused the crowd of hooliganism and drunkenness. Subsequently, independent inquiries found that the stampede was due to gross negligence by police, who had misled the people to shift blame.
Patel’s History
Patel rose to prominence after the events of 6 January 2021, when he promoted a legal defense fund for those arrested in connection with the Capitol breach. A career prosecutor and advisor to right-wing politicians, Patel used his ties with the first Trump administration to pursue commercial projects and a media career. In both roles, he advanced several conspiracy theories, including debunked allegations of voting irregularities and misleading information about Covid-19 vaccines.
