Third British Parents Have Applied for Special Educational Needs Assessment for Their Children, Study Finds

A third of caregivers have requested a educational support screening for their child, based on a poll that uncovers a significant increase in requirement for targeted educational help in educational institutions throughout the Britain.

Rising Apprehension Over Government Proposals

The figures came out amid increasing anxiety in the country over policy reforms to overhaul special needs provision against the backdrop of increasing expenses and a significant gap of specialized SEN placements.

Poll Shows Key Results

The poll of more than 5,800 parents found that 33% of guardians with school-age children reported they had asked for an evaluation for potential learning support requirements from their child’s school.

In England by itself the percentage rose to more than one in three. Past data showed that about 20% of pupils were categorized as requiring additional support last year.

Individual Consequence and Monetary Burden

One in two guardians who requested an screening reported it was undertaken by the educational institution, while the other half mentioned they were still waiting or had funded a private assessment.

25% of those in the queue confirmed they had been waiting for over a full year.

The research also highlighted the individual burden that numerous parents face: Fifteen percent reported they had given up their work to care for their child, while a fifth indicated they had taken time off from their job.

A third of caregivers of children with SEN stated they faced “financial strain due to increased spending” and growing strain at home, while four in ten confirmed they had experienced their own mental health problems.

Rising Identifications and Wider Challenges

We have seen significant increases in identifications of autism spectrum disorder, ADHD and speech and language needs among minors in recent times, with speech disorders and emotional needs rising sharply since the coronavirus outbreak.

The growth in SEND have been called “remarkable”, reflecting “better identification of requirements that were pre-existing” through enhanced knowledge and assessment.

Government Position and Forthcoming Reforms

The education secretary announced that a policy document outlining upcoming adjustments will be published later this year. Anticipations are to increase targeted assistance within regular schools and encourage the establishment of dedicated departments within them.

But, many families and advocates are concerned that the proposals will limit the application of EHCPs.

The department stated it is “committed to improving accessibility and skills in standard schools”, but is dealing with an difficult journey regarding resource allocation for more special school places.

“In spite of the hard work of our educational institutions, a vast number of households are hurting because our SEN system is not working.”

“Parents should not have to stay indefinitely to obtain the help they so urgently need.”
