The Gunners Triumph Powered by Substitutes and Rugby Union Inspiration

Arsenal's manager claims that substitute players in his squad could be increasingly vital than starters this season—a philosophy he reveals borrowing from rugby union.

The Brazilian winger and Leandro Trossard each scored—and set up each other—after entering as late replacements to seal a two-goal win for the London club against the Spanish side in their opening UEFA elite competition fixture.

Recent Struggles and Arteta's Faith

Martinelli has faced a difficult period recently, struggling for consistency and dropped to substitute duty, with recent acquisition the English winger preferred on the left flank.

The experienced attacker, on the other hand, has been limited three substitute appearances this season after featuring regularly during the previous term.

The Gunners' boss emphasized that starting on the bench does not diminish a player's importance, citing similarities with the rugby concept of impact players.

"They are just as crucial, if not more so," Arteta commented. "Substitutes are going to be more important in the coming months sometimes than those who begin the game."

Squad Depth and Injury Absences

The North London side are currently missing key players such as Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, and Kai Havertz due to injuries, while the central defender was only fit enough for the bench.

As a result, Arteta to turn to recent additions sooner than expected, with five of them named in the lineup against Spanish outfit.

Arteta admitted that leaving players out weighs on him, but praised the contributions of both Martinelli and Trossard after initially benching them.

"Very pleased since it is hard on a personal level to leave players out," Arteta said. "Every time you announce the line-up, you let down a group of players."

Team Spirit and Morale Lift

Martinelli, who was once a key figure under the manager, faced a loss of sharpness that led to discussion among supporters about his place in the team.

The winger was aware of external opinions and it dented his self-belief, despite scoring 10 goals across all competitions—including a standout strike in the European quarter-final clash against Real Madrid.

The coach has always shown faith Martinelli in important matches and felt thrilled to see the attacker play a decisive role in the win.

"He fully deserves it," said Arteta. "I adore Martinelli. His attitude, dedication, his positivity—what he gives for the team."

Teammates rushed to congratulate him after his goal, with the defender gesturing toward the player's name in front of the traveling supporters.

"That shows unity," added. "That's why I love working with them daily. How they look out for each other is authentic."

"They desire the best for each other and they appreciate someone who works hard consistently like Martinelli does."

"I was certain that Gabi would respond in this manner. When you test him, he elevates to the occasion. These are moments that will hopefully restore his confidence—he remains an outstanding talent."
