Qarabag Writes History with Stunning Victory Versus Benfica

Qarabag players celebrating historic win

A team from Azerbaijan had never won in the Champions League prior to Qarabag's impressive result versus Benfica.

Qarabag delivered a stunning recovery at Benfica to make history and emerge as the pioneering Azerbaijani side to triumph in a UEFA Champions League group stage fixture.

After securing qualification for Europe's premier competition for the initial occasion in almost a decade, Qarabag FK found themselves facing a two-goal disadvantage after merely 16 minutes following goals from Enzo Barrenechea and Pavlidis.

Qarabag halved the gap on the first half’s midway point through a excellent Andrade finish before fellow player Borges rattled the foot of the post.

Just moments after the half-time, Qarabag shut up the Lisbon arena with the equalizing goal. Marko Jankovic's defence-splitting pass found Duran and he expertly found the back of the net on his first UCL appearance.

Off-the-bench player Kashchuk got the landmark winning goal with just minutes from time, collecting the ball up with his back to goal before converting superbly on the turn.

The team and coaching staff fell to the ground in elation at the final whistle after a victory that will be remembered in European football annals, with their earlier attempt ending with two draws and losses.

Coming up for the Azerbaijani champions is a match in Baku with the Danish side, while the Eagles travel to Stamford Bridge.
