Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People purchasing such treatments must be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

People who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.

"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly starving," described a patient.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural management.
