Nepal's Political Landscape Witnesses Major Partnership Forged Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Discussions Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
