Gianluigi Donnarumma Claims Pep Will Boost His Footwork

The Italian international has stated his belief that working under Manchester City's manager will significantly improve his skills with the ball at his feet. He also revealed that the club had shown serious intent in signing him prior to the summer transfer window.

Unexpected Transfer from PSG

The goalkeeper completed a move from Paris Saint-Germain for a reported fee of ÂŁ30 million on deadline day. The transfer caused surprise due to the view that the shot-stopper is less accomplished with his feet compared to departed players like Ederson or new signing James Trafford.

Addressing the Doubters

When questioned on criticism regarding his ball-playing skills, Donnarumma stated: “I continuously work to get better, and now I’m with a coach who is exceptional in this regard. He will guide me, and we can accomplish a lot.”

He added, “Anticipating danger is key—there are times you can play out, and other moments you need to clear it, especially in high-pressure situations.”

Confident in System

The keeper was confident that the team's approach would remain effective with him between the posts. “Absolutely. Each match requires unique planning. Guardiola will get us ready in the optimal way,” he said.

From Paris to Manchester

After winning the European trophy with Paris Saint-Germain previously, Donnarumma experienced a global final loss to Chelsea in July. He revealed, “I was aware that Manchester City were very interested in me earlier this year. Their pursuit strengthened after the Club World Cup. Knowing that the coach was pushing for my signing motivated me.”

Looking Forward

Donnarumma preferred not to discuss previous contract talks or reports from the French club. “I look toward the present. My desire was to join this club—it was my first choice,” he stated.

Homecoming Challenge

Manchester City are preparing to face Napoli in their European first group game. Donnarumma, originating in the Naples area, spent time at Napoli as a youth. His mother backs the Italian side. “She is torn—I'm hopeful she’ll be on my side,” he joked.

Opposition Watch

The Italian outfit, managed by Antonio Conte, are expected to field ex- United midfielder Scott McTominay and loaned striker Rasmus Højlund. Also of note, Kevin De Bruyne—who left City—has made a strong start in Serie A with scoring twice in his first few games.

Guardiola commented on De Bruyne’s settling-in: “Elite athletes adjust quickly. His talent is unmatched—vision, passing, and finishing. He's unique. I look forward to seeing him after the match.”
