FAI Backs Resolution Calling for Uefa Ban on Israeli Teams

The Football Association of Ireland has voted in favor to present a formal motion to Uefa, demanding the banning of Israel from all European club and international tournaments.

Basis of the Proposed Ban

This motion, which was proposed by Irish side Bohemians, cited alleged breaches by the IFA of two key European football regulations.

  • Inability to apply and uphold an effective policy against racism.
  • Organisation of clubs in disputed territories lacking the consent of the Palestrian FA.

Ballot Results and Future Actions

According to an announcement from the Irish FA, the proposal was backed by 74 votes, with 7 against and two not voting.

The association plans to officially present this request to the Uefa executive committee, seeking the immediate suspension of the Israel Football Association from European tournaments.

In an extraordinary general meeting of the FAI, an ordinary resolution was put to delegates. It was approved by a large margin.

Earlier Uefa Deliberations

Uefa had earlier put on hold intentions to ban Israel at the close of last month, following the revealing of a US peace proposal for the region.

While Uefa never publicly stated contemplating an special session on the issue, plans were believed to be quite advanced.

Global Context

The FAI move comes after similar calls in September from the heads of Turkish and Norwegian governing bodies for banning Israel from global football.

Those requests were issued after United Nations experts asked Fifa and Uefa to suspend Israel, referencing a UN commission of inquiry report that claimed the country of committing genocide during the war in Gaza.

Israel has rejected these claims and described the report as scandalous.

Potential Ramifications

Should Uefa choose to suspend the IFA, it would likely strain relations with the US administration – joint hosts for the upcoming World Cup – which strongly opposes such an measure.

Even though Uefa has the power to suspend Israeli teams from its tournaments, it might not be able to stop them from taking part in qualification for the World Cup, which falls under Fifa.
