In common with most residents of the US territory, Jacqueline Guzman is familiar to hearing about geopolitical risks from China. Despite escalating frictions in the Asia-Pacific, numerous Guamanians are more focused on economic pressures as opposed to strategic threats.
The resident says that her biggest stress is covering expenses, and she holds trust in the US government to guarantee her protection.
Yet that feeling of safety was shaken recently when headlines surfaced of a high-profile display in China, where new military hardware was showcased—among them a ballistic weapon nicknamed the Pacific-range weapon by official outlets.
In addition, the sight of the Chinese leader alongside the top officials of the Russian Federation, DPRK, Iran and allied states suggested a emerging strategic partnership that some see as a serious threat.
“According to news coverage, almost every person in this region should be concerned,” states one Guamanian, in his seventies, who lives adjacent to the command center of the Guam national guard.
“But there’s little residents can change.”
Situated roughly a significant distance east of China, the island serves as a key operational center for the United States in the Asia-Pacific region and is home to a major military presence. Experts note that if China seek to annex Taiwan, the US territory would likely become a key battleground in any potential war.
For this reason, exhibitions of China’s growing armed strength—including strategic weapons, anti-drone technology and autonomous units—are taken seriously across the island.
“This territory is a critical operational site for the America in the Pacific region,” states a official representative for the defense operation.
The representative notes that the zone is among the most ‘critical’ for American security and that armed services are “prepared to defend the nation here on Guam.”
With that in mind, the American government is constructing an advanced protection system designed to offer comprehensive coverage for the territory. According to a newly published statement, the multi-billion dollar project is planned to be completed within 10 years.
“Guam must be knowledgeable of the danger, although not overly concerned,” comments a ex- US marine officer, stating that China’s armed services have surpassed the Americans in certain fields.
“If Beijing opt for their timings and targets carefully… they could significantly damage defense operations,” the expert warns.
However, the same analyst believes that the American forces continues to be powerful and able to counter China’s advanced weaponry.
In addition to the missiles, the appearance of Xi Jinping positioned with the representatives of North Korea and Moscow at the parade prompted fresh anxiety among some in Guam.
One resident explains that she previously felt unconcerned about China—until the “group photo” of Russia’s president, North Korea’s leader and Xi Jinping. This, she says, signals “closer political ties and cooperation” among the countries.
“This can change geopolitical dynamics and make coordinated actions more feasible. It’s worrisome because it could represent a military and security allegiance,” Reilly comments.
Government representatives, though, still assert that defending the island is of critical significance to the armed services.
Elected official a committee chair, who chairs the policy group, explains that the local government gets security updates from federal representatives and that the security of the island is handled “with the utmost seriousness.”
“Residents’ responsibility is to remain calm, informed and united, confident that the proper channels are operational to guarantee our security.”
