Alphabet to Invest $15bn for Constructing AI Computing Facility in the Indian Subcontinent

Computing Infrastructure
The Nation is a key destination for data centres because of its inexpensive data services and quickly expanding internet user base.

Google's parent company the Alphabet conglomerate is set to invest $15bn to build an AI computing facility in the state of Andhra Pradesh in southern India.

The facility, which will be set up in the harbor town of Visakhapatnam, will become a part of Google's international system of artificial intelligence hubs spread across twelve different countries.

"It's the largest AI hub that we are going to be investing in across the globe, excluding the United States of America," the CEO of Google Cloud said at an conference in the capital city of Delhi this Tuesday, noting that the investment will be spread over the next five years.

The announcement comes at a time US President Donald Trump has been encouraging US firms to give priority to investments within the country.

The Expanding Position of India in AI Computing

India has risen as a prime location for artificial intelligence facilities. India's low data costs and quickly expanding internet user base have made it a hub for AI and cloud growth for tech giants.

"This center will introduce our pioneering tech solutions to businesses and consumers in the country, speeding up artificial intelligence advancement and driving growth across the country," commented Alphabet's chief executive Sundar Pichai.

Initiative Particulars

A definitive arrangement to conclude the initiative is scheduled for signing on Tuesday, state authorities said.

"It constitutes a massive leap for our state's technological advancement, progress, and worldwide position," remarked the technology official Nara Lokesh, the technology minister.

This initiative will integrate computing and artificial intelligence facilities with sustainable power solutions and an broader fiber-optic system.

Data Infrastructure Plans

This initiative is part of the Andhra Pradesh government's plan to create 6 gigawatts of data centre capacity by 2029.

Computing facilities are physical facilities that house the computing and networking equipment that organizations use to gather, analyze, save, and share information.

They contain servers, storage systems and network equipment like network routers and security firewalls, along with the required energy and climate management infrastructure to function properly.

Financial Attractions

Across Andhra Pradesh, the government has been providing subsidised land and power to attract international investors.

Industry Growth

India's data centre industry has developed swiftly over the past five years, exceeding the one gigawatt capacity threshold in 2024 and nearly tripling its 2019 capacity.
